Your home office is unique to you and as such can be many things: a quiet place to work on, a room for working on your taxes, or the location where you make your primary income. No matter how you see the function of your home office space, there is the universal truth that all of us want to maximize efficiency and aesthetics of such a space to inspire us to do more. The following are some tips on how you can do that with your home office:

Claim the space and nix the distractions.

Move out the family computer, exercise equipment, and children toys and bring in an office desk and hutch to carve out a dedicated home office space. Make sure that the entire household (including you!) recognizes that this is a place for work - and work alone.

Personalize your home office.

While distractions (ie televisions and treadmills) should be moved out, you should also move in items to personalize the space and make it a better fit for you. For example, a nice rug on wooden floors makes for a great place to plant your feet and enjoy a bit of color. Add a book case or two to store books and other items related to your work. If you are an author, consider adding a comfortable chair and an appropriate lamp for when you need to go over that manuscript in full.

Think ergonomics.

Being comfortable is an important facet of designing an effective home office. That's because if you aren't comfortable, you are more likely to work less or become more easily distracted. Go out and splurge on a good office chair that has great back support and fits perfectly into your office desk so that your monitor and keyboard are always at the right height to nix any award and painful pressure on your arms, wrists, and eyes. You might also consider investing in a second monitor depending upon the nature of your work as a second monitor often helps improve productivity by reducing the amount of time spent jumping through applications.
